US Escalates China Trade Tensions with Tech Firm Blacklist
US blacklisting of Chinese firms amid AI and chip capability tensions has intensified disputes over technology and trade between the United States and China.
China and the United States now face escalating tensions regarding technology and trade, with US export restrictions and sanctions targeting Chinese companies taking center stage.
The United States has imposed export control measures on approximately 80 Chinese entities involved in advanced computing, artificial intelligence, and high-performance chip development, citing national security concerns. More than 50 of these entities, including subsidiaries of prominent companies such as Inspur Group and organizations like the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI), now appear on the US Commerce Department’s export-control entity list. These restrictions bar American companies from collaborating on technological projects without explicit government approval.
In response, the Chinese government has condemned these US actions as an abuse of export control measures and an unwarranted politicization of trade and technology.
Chinese officials argue that the United States makes false national security claims while using these restrictions as a tool of hegemonism, a practice they believe undermines international law and destabilizes the global supply chain. The Chinese government has called for the United States to end these practices and signaled that it will take necessary measures to defend the legitimate interests of its companies.
The Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, one of the targeted organizations, has criticized its inclusion on the entity list as unjustified.
BAAI maintains that its research is publicly available and that it actively contributes to global discussions on artificial intelligence safety. The academy equates the significance of AI to that of electricity as a shared resource for humanity and emphasizes its open-source AI ecosystem, which comprises around 200 models and nearly 100 datasets that have been downloaded more than 600 million times worldwide. The academy warned that continued restrictions could impede openness, hinder scientific innovation, and obstruct global collaboration.
Additional sanctions have affected other high-profile Chinese companies and entities involved in military modernization and advanced technology programs.
These include firms linked to Huawei as well as organizations engaged in developing exascale supercomputers, hypersonic weapons, and quantum technologies. A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce cautioned that such measures might disrupt global industrial and supply chains and reduce opportunities for bilateral dialogue and cooperation.
High-level discussions have taken place amid these tensions, with Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng engaging in video talks with the US Trade Representative.
During these talks, concerns were raised over US tariffs and the broader implications of ongoing trade investigations. These discussions reveal the complexity of the US-China trade relationship as both sides navigate rapid technological developments and strategic security challenges.

Prime Minister Shinawatra Survives No-Confidence Vote Despite Intense Scrutiny
No-Confidence Debate and Vote focused on scrutinizing Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s government's performance.
The debate centered on a no-confidence motion against the government and unfolded during a 32‑hour session on March 24 and 25.
Opposition members questioned the government's economic management, transparency in major infrastructure projects, alleged corruption, and national security policies. Opposition leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut initiated the motion, which was later put to an electronic ballot vote on March 26, 2025.
During the vote, 319 of the 487 members of the House of Representatives supported the prime minister, while 162 voted against her and 7 abstained.
Section 151 of the Constitution required at least 247 votes for the motion to succeed. Since the vote count did not meet the constitutional threshold, the no-confidence motion failed, allowing Prime Minister Shinawatra to continue in office.
Throughout the debate, Prime Minister Shinawatra defended her government's commitment to transparency, due process, and responsible governance.
She responded to opposition members' concerns over the actions of individual ministers. The debate also addressed the Khao Kradong land conflict in Buriram province—a case involving the Department of Lands, the State Railway of Thailand, and local residents. The prime minister reassured lawmakers and the public that the case would follow proper legal procedures, affirming that justice and social harmony would be maintained without shortcuts or political interference.

Transformative Indigenous Artillery Acquisition in India
Bids and contracts in the Indian defense sector are shaping the future of indigenous military capabilities.
The Indian Defence Ministry has finalized a contract worth approximately Rs 6,900 crore to procure 307 advanced towed artillery gun systems (ATAGS) and 327 high mobility 6x6 gun-towing vehicles.
This deal, representing the first significant indigenous procurement of heavy-duty howitzers from the private sector, awards Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems a 60:40 production split. Bharat Forge, having submitted the lowest bid, will manufacture 60% of the artillery guns at its Jeguri facility in Pune, while Tata Advanced Systems will produce the remaining 40%. Deliveries are scheduled over the next five years as the ministry replaces older artillery systems.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) developed the ATAGS in collaboration with the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE).
The 155mm/52-calibre gun system is recognized for its high accuracy, reliability, and ability to fire five-round bursts. It achieves a strike range of up to approximately 45-48 kilometers and incorporates over 65% domestically sourced components. Field trials have rigorously tested the system since the project's inception in 2013, and its technical attributes promise a significant enhancement in the Indian Army's long-range firepower, particularly along the borders with China and Pakistan.
The ATAGS contract is part of the broader capital procurement initiative by the Ministry of Defence, which has reached a value of Rs 1.4 lakh crore for the current fiscal year.
The Prime Minister-led Cabinet Committee on Security approved the contract, which aligns with efforts to promote self-reliance in defence manufacturing and modernize artillery regiments. By replacing older systems with these advanced towed guns, the procurement strengthens the operational capabilities of the Indian Army while bolstering the indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.

India's UPI Outage Disrupts Digital Payments Nationwide
The recent disruption to UPI services in India brought widespread challenges to users across multiple digital payment platforms.
UPI services experienced significant interruptions throughout the country, as DownDetector recorded around 2,750 complaints by 7:50 PM.
Reports indicated that Google Pay users filed 296 complaints, Paytm encountered 119, and SBI customers reported 376 issues related to funds transfer and online banking. Prominent payment apps like PhonePe and services from major banks such as HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank also faced severe outages.
Users expressed their frustration on social media by sharing accounts of transactions being debited without reaching intended recipients, which interfered with everyday activities like making small purchases and settling payments at retail stores.
For many, the disruption marked the first instance of UPI downtime, prompting concerns about the platform’s overall reliability.
Despite the recent technical difficulties, UPI continues to demonstrate robust growth.
In January, the system processed over 16.99 billion transactions with a total value exceeding 23.48 lakh crore, making it a vital part of India’s digital payments ecosystem by accounting for 80 percent of retail payments. Within these transactions, People to Merchant (P2M) transfers constituted 62.35 percent of the volume, while peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions made up 37.65 percent for FY 24-25 up to January.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) confirmed that they addressed the technical issues and have stabilized the system.
NPCI provided updates on their resolution efforts, noting that the service had been unstable for approximately one hour during the incident on March 26, 2025.

Lee Jae-myung Acquittal Sparks Political Tensions in South Korea
Lee Jae-myung was acquitted by the Seoul High Court on March 26, 2025, after an appeal trial for violations of the Public Official Election Act.
The court overturned a one-year prison sentence handed down in November 2024, ruling that the allegations regarding his comments about former Director Kim Moon-ki and zoning changes in Seongnam lacked sufficient evidence.
This decision reduces his immediate legal risks and is expected to strengthen his position within his party as he prepares for potential early presidential elections.
The acquittal has prompted the Democratic Party to consolidate support for Lee, with many party members viewing the verdict as confirmation of his legal and political stance.
His supporters have celebrated the ruling as a victory against perceived political persecution and have called for judicial reforms to address what they describe as excessive investigations and indictments.
In contrast, the People Power Party has expressed significant disappointment with the ruling.
Party officials, including floor leader Kweon Seong-dong and interim leader Kwon Young-se, argued that the decision sets a problematic precedent by exempting Lee from penalties that other politicians have faced under similar charges. They questioned the clarity and fairness of the legal basis for his acquittal and urged the Supreme Court to review the decision to resolve these legal uncertainties.
Despite the acquittal, Lee faces additional legal challenges with a total of eight indictments, five of which remain active, involving allegations such as perjury and corruption linked to city development projects.
These ongoing legal proceedings and the potential for appeals to the Supreme Court contribute to the complex political landscape in South Korea, intensifying debates between the nation’s two major political factions.

Cyberattack Disrupts Kuala Lumpur International Airport Operations Amidst Ransom Demand
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad and relevant government agencies faced a significant cyber security incident at Kuala Lumpur International Airport last Sunday.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad experienced a cyber incident that targeted computer systems at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Technical teams actively monitored the situation and implemented protective measures while prioritizing uninterrupted flight operations. Partners collaborated with MAHB to maintain seamless passenger processing, and the National Cyber Security Agency maintained close oversight of the incident, confirming that KLIA's core operations remained unaffected as they continued to support MAHB.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim addressed a US$10 million ransom demand issued by cyber attackers at the 218th Police Day event.
Authorities confirmed that hackers attempted to breach MAHB's systems, and the government promptly rejected the ransom demand. The prime minister did not disclose details of the attack or the identities of those involved, instead emphasizing the collaboration among agencies and the need for further advancements and increased funding in national cybersecurity measures.
Conflicting reports emerged regarding the incident’s operational impact at KLIA.
Some accounts indicate that the cyber attack disrupted operations for more than 10 hours, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Reports described compromised baggage handling systems that forced staff to switch to manual processing, resulting in numerous flight delays and intermittent failures of flight information boards over two days. The lack of a robust backup system reportedly slowed restoration efforts. Social media discussions revealed divided opinions, with some users noting an extended impact on flight information displays while others provided evidence of normal operations. Authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the incident and assess measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Tokyo Court Orders Dissolution of World Peace Unification Family Over Illegal Solicitation Practices
The Tokyo District Court’s decision to dissolve the World Peace Unification Family, formerly known as the Unification Church, marks a significant turning point in Japanese legal actions against religious groups.
The Tokyo District Court ordered the dissolution of the World Peace Unification Family, citing illegal solicitation of donations that inflicted considerable financial and psychological harm on its followers.
The court implemented its decision under the Religious Corporations Act, thereby stripping the organization of its official legal status and associated tax benefits while allowing it to operate in a limited, non-corporate capacity. This ruling represents the first instance in Japan where a religious organization has been dissolved through civil law due to manipulative fundraising practices. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology presented extensive evidence documenting over 1,500 victims and at least 20.4 billion yen (approximately $135 million) in damages.
Investigations established that since at least 1980 the Unification Church employed aggressive and deceptive donation tactics by using fear and pressure to secure high-value contributions from members and their families.
Although a formal declaration in 2009 led to a reduction in donation volumes, the court determined that fraudulent and exploitative practices continued. The substantial accumulation of damages, reflected in lawsuits, settlements, and financial claims, led the court to conclude that dissolution was necessary because voluntary reform was unlikely. The comprehensive investigation revealed clear evidence of hidden solicitations and exploitation of personal grievances.
The ruling builds on legal precedents, including a recent Supreme Court decision confirming that civil law violations justify dissolution.
The court stipulated that if the appeal fails, a liquidator will assume control of the asset liquidation process, which involves managing more than 100 properties across Japan and assets valued in the tens of billions of yen. This decision will severely restrict the church’s ability to operate under tax-exempt status. Legal groups have raised concerns that premature asset transfers or complications during liquidation could impede victim relief, prompting calls for new legislation to protect these assets and ensure fair compensation.
Political and societal issues also intertwined with the legal proceedings, as the church maintained close ties with members of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party and was entangled in controversies following the 2022 assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The church’s leadership, including President Tomihiro Tanaka, decried the decision and announced plans to appeal, while critics and victim advocates stressed that the organization’s methods have had profound negative impacts on its members’ well-being. The court’s findings and actions occur amid broader investigations into the church’s political connections and its enduring reputation for coercive donation practices.

Rapidly Spreading Forest Fires Devastate Ehime Prefecture
Forest fires in Imabari and nearby regions of Ehime Prefecture have unleashed rapid, far-reaching impacts on forested and residential areas alike.
Forest fires have spread quickly across multiple regions, with the most significant incidents occurring in Imabari City and impacting neighboring locales.
In Nagasawa, Imabari City, the blaze burned over 214 hectares by March 25 and continued encroaching on buildings as uncontrollable conditions escalated. The fire ignited on March 23 and expanded to consume 306 hectares in Imabari while affecting areas in Okayama City and Tamano City, with reports affirming that 310 hectares in total were affected across the region.
Firefighting operations mobilized an extensive, multi-agency response that drew on both local and national resources.
Self-Defense Force helicopters conducted 203 aerial water drops on March 25, while approximately 20 helicopters, including CH47 transport types, supported the aerial firefighting efforts. On the same day, local authorities deployed about 90 additional fire department personnel after requesting extra support. A new operational framework activated under the Joint Operations Commander saw Defense Minister Gen Nakatani directing efficient allocation of resources across the affected regions.
Evacuation orders have played a central role in the emergency measures taken by local authorities.
In Imabari City, authorities evacuated 7,342 residents from districts such as Nagasawa and Asakurakita, and updated figures confirmed that 7,494 individuals across 3,848 households received evacuation orders, including an additional 340 evacuees from the neighboring city of Saijo. Temporary evacuation centers now offer refuge for hundreds of residents, and schools have been closed as part of the public safety measures.
The fires have also inflicted significant structural damage by reaching populated areas.
In Imabari City, officials reported that the blaze destroyed six houses and two warehouses, after initial figures mistakenly indicated the loss of seven houses. In Okayama City, the fire expanded to approximately 423 hectares as local firefighters, supported by teams from Nagano, Shiga, Hiroshima, and Kagawa, focused their efforts on protecting residential areas.
Government bodies at both the prefectural and national levels have escalated their responses to the worsening fires.
Ehime Prefecture convened a disaster countermeasure meeting as Governor Nakamura Tokihiro prioritized human safety. This response was further supported by the activation of a full Countermeasures Office at the Prime Minister's Office Crisis Management Center, a measure taken amidst persistent dry and windy conditions that continue to complicate firefighting efforts.

Revised Population Policy: Third Child Disciplinary Measures Removed
Discipline surrounding family policies and party members centers on revised population policy regulations.
The revised population policy regulations eliminate disciplinary measures against Party members for having a third child.
The Central Inspection Commission issued Instruction No 15, which became effective on March 20, and now removes the provisions that previously allowed disciplinary actions for Party members with a third child. This change means that having a third child is no longer classified as a violation subject to penalties. The instruction also confirms that no penalties will apply for having one or two children, except under government-defined conditions.
The update aligns with recent directives from the Politburo, including those in Official Dispatch No 13421, and follows seven years of implementation under Resolution No 21 of the population policy.
The revised regulations confirm that any disciplinary measures taken before this change regarding a third child will still be in effect. The Central Inspection Commission and other overseeing bodies expedited this revision based on recommendations from various political committees and assessments of current societal needs.
Alongside this regulatory change, the Ministry of Health is drafting a Population Law to address challenges such as declining fertility trends, gender imbalances at birth, and population aging.
This new law aims to secure a replacement fertility rate while incorporating demographic variables into broader socio-economic planning efforts. The National Assembly Party Committee and the Government Party Committee are working to fast-track the legislative process, targeting approval in 2025, and plan for these updated legal frameworks to replace older policies from the 2003 Population Ordinance and its subsequent amendments.

Devastating Wildfires Ravage Southeastern South Korea
Wildfires in South Korea's southeastern region have caused widespread damage to communities, forests, cultural heritage sites, and infrastructure.
Wildfires have devastated extensive regions, with confirmed fatalities ranging from 23 to 26, including a pilot who perished in a helicopter crash during firefighting operations.
The fires destroyed over 200 structures and ravaged woodland areas, with estimates of burned land ranging from 36,000 hectares to 43,330 acres. Evacuations have impacted between 27,000 and 37,000 residents, and communities such as Uiseong, Andong, and Cheongsong experienced further displacement.
All available resources have been mobilized to contain the fires, which are considered among the worst in South Korea’s history by both the extent of burnt land and the severe impact on human life.
The acting President proclaimed a state of emergency and directed senior officials, including Acting Interior Minister Ko Ki-dong, to manage disaster relief operations. Approximately 4,650 firefighters and soldiers have joined efforts, while between 118 and 130 helicopters combat the wildfires amid challenging environmental conditions such as strong winds, dry weather, and sporadic rainfall delays.
Wildfires have burned for four to five days across areas including Uiseong-gun, Andong, Sancheong-gun, and Ulju-gun.
The flames have consumed nearly 17,534 hectares of forest, with Uiseong experiencing the most extensive loss. Reports indicate 15 to 18 fatalities, numerous injuries, and thousands of residents displaced. Evacuation orders affect over 23,000 people, and efforts to control the fires face significant challenges due to strong gusts, dry conditions, and the fires’ rapid spread.
The fires have also affected valuable cultural heritage.
Gounsa Temple in Uiseong, a historic temple dating back over 1,000 years to the Silla Dynasty, was completely destroyed, though national treasures and artifacts had been relocated beforehand. Other important structures include a significant Buddhist edifice from the Joseon Dynasty and pavilions such as Manhyujeong, which now face severe threats. Authorities have raised the disaster alert level in a bid to protect national heritage sites, mobilizing resources to evaluate and safeguard additional landmarks, including the UNESCO-listed Hahoe Village.
A large-scale emergency response has been activated with thousands of firefighters, military personnel, and over 128 helicopters deployed to combat the wildfires.
The response has involved relocating vulnerable groups from correctional facilities and nursing homes, implementing extensive traffic and evacuation procedures, and moving fire management command centers. Nearly 27,800 evacuees now reside in temporary shelters, while power outages affect tens of thousands of households and train and highway services have been suspended in the worst-hit areas.
Major financial groups and companies, coupled with public donations, are contributing significantly to relief and recovery efforts.
Financial institutions such as KB, Shinhan, Hana, and Woori have each donated 1 billion won (approximately $680,000), while Dunamu and HD Hyundai have made similar contributions. Hyundai Motor Group has provided 2 billion won (around $1.26 million) alongside deploying emergency support vehicles, mobile office buses, and offering special repair discounts for wildfire-damaged vehicles. Public fundraising efforts on platforms like Navers Happybean and KakaoTogether have raised additional significant donations, and food companies have distributed emergency food packs and ready-to-eat meals to affected communities.
Government officials have intensified emergency measures by elevating the crisis level, mobilizing over 11,000 personnel, and issuing wideranging evacuation orders.
Efforts to manage the fire have been complicated by winds sometimes reaching 25 to 27 m/s, which have delayed operations and hindered the deployment of thermal imaging drones. Authorities continue to investigate incidents that occurred during evacuations while closely monitoring several regions as rain is expected to assist in containment.
